How to enable dark mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets on Android

If you like dark mode and use Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides, you’ll be happy to know that Google has just released a new feature that adds dark theme compatibility to its Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps. A dark theme not only preserves your device’s battery life, but it’s also gentle on the eyes, so you don’t feel uncomfortable staring at the screen. You can learn how to enable dark mode on Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on Android, iOS, and the web by following this instruction.

How to make google docs dark mode

On Android, how to enable dark mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets

Note that because the dark theme feature is still being rolled out, you may not see it on your Android device right away, but rest assured that it will arrive soon. In terms of our personal experience, we tested Google Docs dark mode on our Google Pixel 2 XL on Android 11 beta and it worked flawlessly.

To enable dark mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets on your Android phone or tablet, follow these steps.

  • Open Google Docs, Slides, or Sheets through your device. All of these apps have the same technique for enabling dark mode.
  • Go to Settings > Choose a theme by tapping the hamburger icon.
  • To use the app in dark mode, select Dark.

However, there is a technique to preview a specific file in a light theme without turning off the app’s dark theme. Follow the steps below.

  • Open Google Docs, Slides, or Sheets through your device.
  • Open a file > tap the vertical three-dots icon > select View in light theme if the dark theme is already active.

On iOS, how to turn on dark mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets

You can enable dark mode on Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets by modifying a few settings on your iPhone or iPad. Follow the instructions and you’ll thank us later.

  • If you haven’t already, head to the App Store and download Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets for your iOS device.
  • You’ll need to enable Smart Invert on your iOS device before you can launch the Google apps. To do so, navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Smart Invert and turn it on.
  • When you exit Settings and open any of your favorite Google apps, you’ll see that the app now has a darker theme.

You can preview your papers in dark mode on Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets by doing so, but there are colors and objects in iOS that don’t play well after you exit the app. Because Smart Invert isn’t a great dark mode solution, this is the case. You can always turn off Smart Invert after you’ve finished using the Google apps in that instance. However, we understand that turning on/off Smart Invert might be a lengthy process, so follow these steps to make it go more quickly.

  • Accessibility Shortcuts may be added by going to Settings > Control Centre > scrolling down and selecting Add Accessibility Shortcuts.
  • Return to the previous screen, press Accessibility, scroll to the bottom, and tap Accessibility Shortcut, then check Smart Invert.

Instead of going through the Settings menu to enable or disable Smart Invert, you may now visit the Control Centre on your iPhone or iPad and enable or disable Smart Invert with a single tap on the Accessibility Shortcut. Thank you very much.

On the web, how to enable dark mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets

While using Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on the web, there is no official way to turn on the dark theme, similar to iOS. Even so, you can make these aforementioned apps operate in dark mode by changing a few settings in Chrome. Follow the steps below.

  • On your PC, open Google Chrome and type chrome:/flags/#enable-force-dark in the address bar.
  • Web Contents in Force Dark Mode will be disabled. Restart Google Chrome after enabling this option.

You may now use Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets in a dark theme on Google Chrome. This is how you can use It, Slides, and Sheets for Android in dark mode.
